The installation Fungifiction creates an ecotopia for the Ruhr Area as a postindustrial landscape. Contaminated soil was purified by wondrous vital mushrooms, whose cultivation on a grand scale not just cures deseases but also the farming society itself.
Based on real facts Fungifiction explores the possibilities of connecting the real and the utopia.
In a video-interview the director of the International Mushroom Research Centre Ruhr speaks about an exotic mushroom discovery on the former coking plant area in Dortmund. It turned out to be a vital mushroom imported and planted by chinese workers during the dismounting of the coking plant in 2006.
Against all expectations scientific examinations showed that the mushroom was not contaminated but on the contrary highly potent in medical active ingredients. It was a sensational discovery that the mushrooms generate their cure directly out of the toxic heavy metals while they simultaneously sanify the polluted soil.
The Installation shows real mushrooms and mixes up their real potential to cure with a fiction about the Ruhr Area. Based on the Mushroom Research Centre Austria, a fantastic little imperium to save the planet run by 2 young scientists, was just
exaggerated to it´s own future dreaming.
